Hip pain is a common issue for many people, especially those who lead moderately active lifestyles. In fact, 3 out of 4 of our physios have had hip surgery!
Whether you experience discomfort while walking, stiffness after sitting for long periods, or sharp pain when moving, hip pain can interfere with daily activities and your overall quality of life.
In this blog, we’ll explore the common causes of hip pain and explain how physiotherapy can help you find relief and keep you moving comfortably.
Common Causes of Hip Pain
Osteoarthritis: As we age, the cartilage in our joints gradually wears down. Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent causes of hip pain, leading to stiffness, inflammation, and discomfort, especially in the morning or after long periods of inactivity.
Hip Bursitis: Bursitis occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint become inflamed. This often happens due to repetitive movements, prolonged pressure, or poor posture, resulting in sharp pain on the outer hip.
Tendonitis: Overuse or strain on the tendons surrounding the hip can lead to tendonitis, causing pain and stiffness, particularly with movement. Runners, cyclists, and those who engage in repetitive hip motions are more prone to this condition.
Hip Impingement (FAI - Femoroacetabular Impingement): This occurs when extra bone growth around the hip joint leads to improper movement, causing pain and stiffness. It can contribute to cartilage damage if left untreated.
Lower Back Issues & Sciatica: Sometimes, hip pain is actually referred from the lower back. Sciatic nerve irritation can cause pain that radiates from the lower back through the hip and down the leg.
Weak Muscles & Poor Posture: Weak glutes, core, and hip muscles can place extra strain on the hip joint, leading to discomfort over time. Poor posture, prolonged sitting, and lack of mobility can also contribute to hip pain.
How Physiotherapy Can Help with Hip Pain
Physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to reduce hip pain, restore mobility, and prevent future issues. Here’s how we can help:
✅ Comprehensive Assessment – We identify the root cause of your pain, whether it’s joint-related, muscular, or referred pain from another area.
✅ Hands-on Treatment – Techniques such as joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage, and myofascial release can help relieve stiffness and improve movement.
✅ Personalised Exercise Program – Strengthening weak muscles, improving flexibility, and correcting imbalances can reduce strain on the hip joint and enhance overall function.
✅ Postural & Movement Advice – We help you adjust your posture and movement patterns to prevent pain from returning.
✅ Pain Relief Techniques – manual therapyy, shockeave therapy, taping, acupuncture, and other pain management strategies can provide relief and support long-term recovery.
